The Real Benefits of Fun Days at School
At St. Ronald's Homeschool in Brackenhurst, Alberton we take academics seriously – CAPS, IEB, Cambridge and GED all receive focused attention. But we also know that children thrive when learning is balanced with joy, creativity and connection. That is why we regularly host fun dress-up days, themed events and social activities.
These days are not just “extra fun”. Research and everyday experience show they deliver real educational and emotional benefits.

1. They build confidence and self-expression
When a quiet Grade 8 learner arrives dressed as a pirate or a Ghostface character, something shifts. Costumes give children permission to step outside their usual roles. Many students who are reserved in the classroom suddenly become more outgoing, more willing to speak up and more comfortable in their own skin. Fun days create a safe space for self-expression that carries over into everyday learning.
2. They strengthen friendships and belonging
Homeschool students sometimes miss the informal social opportunities that large schools provide. Shared experiences – laughing together in silly outfits, posing for group photos, helping each other with props – create memories and friendships that last. How we do it at St. Ronald's
Our dress-up days and special events are kept simple and inclusive. Students are encouraged (never forced) to participate. The focus is on fun, respect and community rather than competition. Photos from these days often become favourite memories for both learners and parents.
