Why do people homeschool?
Homeschooling is the education of children by their parents in their own home and it became legal for parents in 1996 to teach their own children at home in South Africa. The Department of Education permits parents to call in the assistance of a tutor or tutors so you do not need to do it alone.
Step 1 after you have decided to remove your child from mainstream schooling is to decide on a curriculum provider to use, and a Tutor center to assist if you are not going to do it full time yourself at home. We recommend the following Curriculum providers – Impaq, Think Digital, or Teneo.
The second step is to ask for your child’s transfer certificate from their current school. Keep this for your own records.
You need to inform the department of education that you are homeschooling your child if they are between the ages of 7 and 16. Here is a link to the website where you can find the form as well as more information from the Dept regarding Homeschooling
We suggest you make use of CAPS approved curriculum providers which mean that your child can return to a mainstream school at any time without any problems if you so wish. We also offer Cambridge via our Cambridge approved provider
The benefits of homeschooling are that your child will receive one-on-one attention in a safe and homely environment.
Some of the reasons parents prefer to go the homeschool route is that:
- they feel that their child receives a poor level of education in schools;
- over-crowded classrooms;
- lack of discipline;
- financial reasons;
- proximity to a suitable school;
- unhappy child;
- a child that does not fit in at school;
- religious reasons etcetera,
We are able to assist you with your Homeschooling needs at our premises at 11 Vermooten Street, Alberton, Or Online via our Dedicated Zoom link.
